Dear Mr. Gene Simmons,
Hi we are a band called SOMA from Toronto, Canada. We have tried to get label interest here in Canada but it is very difficult. We have done a press kit and shopped it to labels but have had little response. We have radio play in the College scene and some major cities in Canada but have not broken into the major radio scene in Toronto. Unfortunately we do not have an electronic press kit available at this time but we do have a video uploaded to our mysapce account. Hopefully you can check it out at www.myspace.com/somamusic. We hope to hear some feedback from you regarding our music and future opportunities in the music industry.
Thanks for your time,
Phil Villa - drummer of SOMA
Response from Gene:

GENE SIMMONS GIVES
DEAN LICKYER $10,000
ViewMag.com
By Ric Taylor

We really didn’t have to hear the news but still, it felt good to hear Dean Lickyer had received such validation from Kiss’s Gene Simmons.
What? You didn’t hear? It’s hard to believe how many years we’ve been writing about Dean Lickyer (or when they were previously known as High Voltage) but the boys are all grown up – of age, no less, and touring the country now causing more people’s heads to turn and ask, ‘Are those kids really that good?’
With their parents’ Aerosmith, Sabbath and Priest records as a template, Dean Lickyer have honed their hard rock well beyond their years and immediately capture anyone’s attention. They are that talented and still that young.
Some bands submit but Dean Lickyer were invited to be a part of the TV show “Disband” – where Greig Nori reportedly exclaimed he’d quit the show if the band was asked, as so many are, to throw in the towel. Not only did they not disband but they also got a booking agent out of the deal and a myriad of downloads of their music from the national exposure.
Their parents agreed that post secondary education might not be the best route at this time, and so the foursome – featuring Josh Alvernia (vocals), Sean Royle (guitars), Justin Bosso (bass guitar) and Eric Martin (drums) – have been touring for the last year and making a name for themselves. However, it was a month ago at a Canadian Music Week showcase in Toronto where the buzz for the band shifted into higher gear.
“We knew about the label; we didn’t know he had heard of us and we actually had no clue he was even giving away 10 grand,” recalls Martin on Simmons at CMW. “Apparently, in his speech during the day he said he would give the best band he saw 10 grand.”
Simmons had made national headlines by announcing a new partnership with former Conservative candidate Belinda Stronach to form a new record company to mine Canadian talent. Not surprisingly, Simmons didn’t go after the electronica or freakdelic folk – when he found Dean Lickyer, he found his golden boys.
“He is like he is on his TV show – everything you would expect,” offers Martin on Simmons. “One thing that impressed me was that he stood around and took pictures with everyone there. He was very approachable and just told us to keep doing what we are doing. He said he thought we were the best band at CMW. It’s an amazing feeling anytime someone of his stature in music complements you like that.”
Sadly, in no need of extra cash, Simmons simply gave the band his appearance fee for the event with no talk of joining this new label. $10 thousand is still quite the prize but rather unlike their Aerosmith influences, the Simmons windfall won’t go to cocaine and hookers for Dean Lickyer.
“We are going to get a van and trailer to get a little comfortable for the seven–week tour we have coming up,” notes Martin on the more sensible purchase to better the band.
This weekend, the boys do another hometown return before setting out yet again on tour to find new heads to turn, new fans to make and perhaps Simmons or new music moguls to run up on stage again. With Canadian dates set to take them out to Vancouver in May, then from Los Angeles back up to Buffalo in June and back home just in time to perform at Edgefest, it’s hard to believe a new CDEP is set for release this summer – but the band is known for their work ethic.
“It’s still very exciting every time we get on stage,” smiles Martin. “We played 125 shows last year but being 19, travelling across North America with your friends, seeing places and meeting nice people – the whole experience has been amazing and still is.”

Mr. Simmons,
I was at the debate you had with Mr. Lefsetz and I fully support your perspective. Canadian talent needs people like you to be given that head start that is almost impossible to get by being an Indie Artist.
Knowing you are such a great believer in the Canadian talent, why don't you put together "Canada's Got Talent" and put skeptics like Mr. Lefsetz in their place? That would give Canadian talent of all ages a chance to show what they can do. If anybody has the power to make this happen and do it right, it's you!
Regards,
Giuseppe Mileto

Straight to the point:
I am a record producer/sound engineer and I have a great opportunity for your label, 1,300,000 hits on my artist's webpage
12 000 000 views in the last 18 months.
He did not sign anything yet with any production company/label and we are looking
at finishing the first album in august. He is young, talented and already the demand is overwhelming.
We need good advice, money and
a fast-track plan to push his career. Based on what I know about you, you are the one that can make it happen. Not only making you richer in the process
and helping your label succeed but, with a touch of humor, making all this fun.
He has been classified on numerous websites as: Hip Hop, Electro and Powerpop . We are not afraid of hard work, we are based in montreal.
Since no other information will be sent in advance and only by FTP download , I will be waiting for your phone call until april 27th. If I have no answer by then,
I will have to look for another label... unfortunately timing is everything.

CANADIAN MUSIC WEEK 2009 - Part ONE

I caught a slice of CMW’s most sought after Keynote Speaker; Gene Simmons of Kiss. He visited Toronto a few times lately, all in search of bands and artists to sign onto his label. I didn’t get an interview with him- not surprised wasn’t expecting to, everyone wanted a piece, it was insanity!
I arrived just in time to catch the last half of Gene’s Media Conference Q&A, completely missed the keynote. Although I missed my chance to ask a question at the Q&A, I was entertained by a few of the so called “professionals” who were completely tongue tied and intimidated when Gene was in their presence, it was jokes! I honestly thought he was on the stage, but once I realized that Gene was on the floor and not on the stage it was crazy how tall this Larry is and he wasn’t even wearing the platform boots!
What Gene’s looking for in an artist is someone who will blow everyone away, he wants bigger than Kelly Clarkson, Britney, Kiss etc...You get the drift. He wants bands and artists who have quality and quantity.
He was bitching about how “These days most artists have no fucking clue how to read notes, they don’t know the theory or the history.” Honestly maybe some people are dyslexic when it comes to the notes; they have ear training for a reason! I do get what he’s saying but he also contradicts himself when he says he would want another ‘Jon-ass ‘ brothers.
Yet to actually meet Gene to jibber face to face, I didn’t even bother trying to talk to him. Far too many people on him like vultures fighting over a corpse in the desert. There were so many fans in the migration area fresh from the Simmons Keynote address when I was arriving. More than enough were wearing t-shirts and other Kiss merchandise, some even had the makeup done! I always heard Kiss fans were hardcore Greenies and Teenies! He’s just a dude! An old man right now! I never got why people trip so hard when it comes to successful people in any industry. Talented or not people trip hard, still don’t know why, I never get a straight answer when I ask.
If I really wanted to jibber to him I would have, I already met Paul Stanley back in 1998 when I was 16 that is good enough for me. If you want to meet them all, go ahead and try! Kiss announced they will be going back on tour and they are letting the fans route the cities they will hit up for their tour.
